Do You Ever Wish You Were A Cat?
  January 16, 2005 | Philippians 4:4-7

Every day we are faced with many decisions. Some of them small and some of them not so small. But we step ever onward with the hopes that we will be as happy as we are meant to be.

But how happy are we supposed to be? Are we supposed to be deliriously happy or are we meant to be somewhat happy, but with aspirations for something better?

Whatever the case may be, God is there for us to help us and guide us on the right path even though we get side-tracked by our own desires.

So what are you doing today? Are you happy? Do you want to be? Of course we all want to be. Or do we? The reason this question is asked is because there are things that just don't make sense in this world.

Sometimes I wonder why I write these sermons. I often wish somebody would comment or give me feedback. But then I admit that we are all rushed for one reason or another and so who has the time to comment on anothers writing.

But what would this world be like without feedback? You would not know if what you were doing was right. But then can you really say that what is going on in your life is right or not?

That is where God comes in. He can set you right.

But how do you know when God is giving you advice? Some may say it is instinct or a certain decisiveness, or maybe a cosmic frying pan to the head in times of real misunderstanding. Whatever it may be, it is probably different for different people.

So I realize by now you are probably sitting there right now wondering if I am going to make any sense, or whether or not the villain in your favorite soap opera will ever understand why his wife is cheating on him with another woman.

But seriously, we all have a purpose in life. Oh my gosh, you mean to tell me there is a purpose in life, you may be thinking. Of course there is and if you ever figure it out let me now so I can spread the word.

But wait a minute, that is what I am supposed to do. By telling all you boys and girls why God does the things He does. I do not know, but pondering the whys and wherefores makes for interesting after dinner chat while sampling a chocolate eclair or maybe the latest flavor in sponge cake.

It is like cats. They act rather silly and funny and they look at the world like a giant ball of yarn when they are young. And when they get older they just lay there as if bored but at the same time just content to make eye contact with you in the hopes of getting that latest fish stuff in a bowl. Or maybe some catnip to make them crazy if only for a fleeting moment only to flop right down again for another afternoon cat nap.

Sounds like an interesting life. Cats do not have to face the rat race, although I am sure they would love to.

So the point I am trying to make is that you don't have to twist your brain into a pretzel trying to figure out what the point to life is, because all you have to do is ask God for guidance.

Hope is a major factor in life. You can hope for the best or you can make things happen. If you hope for the best without taking any action, you are like one of those giant sunflowers whose flower gets so heavy that it falls closer and closer to the ground every day. That is because without action, your life goes nowhere.

So what action are you supposed to take? Praying for starters. Then reading the Bible and really spending some time with God. Because until you do the rat race will never be as fun for you as it would be for a cat.

Let God be a part of your life and the more you do the more things will make sense. That way the older you get and the more new people in your life look just look like someone else you've seen before, you can feel fresh and alive in the love that God gives so freely to all that ask for it.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us all to cheer up and feel your love and your understanding. Give us each day with new thoughts and help us to see the world through an infants eyes, full of newness and not just the humdrums and dullness that we just get used to. Help us to look at a tree as a part of your creation rather than a view blocker and a mess maker as the pine needles grace our patios with their company. And thank you for all your many blessings. Amen.

Benediction: Now, Lord, Bless us in our daily lives. Help us to smell the roses whenever possible, to shine our light on those less fortunate than us, and lead us in the path we should go. For you are the light that keeps our path well lit. Help us to follow it, until we meet you, in a land where milk and honey abound, a place where our most wonderful dreams are fulfilled. Amen.

Hi, my name is Bryan, a messenger of hope who would love to hear from you. God Bless.
